Abstract
Melioidosis is caused by the gram-negative bacterium, Burkholderia pseudomallei, a soil and water saprophyte endemic to tropical and subtropical regions globally. Infection occurs following percutaneous inoculation following (sometimes minor) trauma, inhalation/aspiration, or ingestion of unchlorinated water; person-to-person and zoonotic infection are extremely rare. Clusters of cases due to a common source occasionally occur due to contaminated products
