Abstract

Malawi is now hosting the first humanitarian drone testing centre in Africa. The purpose of this article is to explain and demonstrate how drones are used to solve real-life challenges. Having worked with drones for humanitarian purposes, the authors discuss the use of Kasungu Airport as a drone testing airspace. Using application examples, the authors feature stories about Malawi’s drone use since 2016. We mention current research and innovative developments in the use of drones for medical deliveries and disease surveillance and opportunities for the future.
