The battle against paediatric HIV is far from over – Authors' reply

We want to thank Philippe Van de Perre and Thorkild Tylleskär for their Correspondence in response to our Seminar on HIV.1 We agree with Van de Perre and Tylleskär that there are substantial barriers on the path to elimination of HIV among children and that they have received less attention. Although new infections among children younger than 15 years have substantially declined, progress along the care continuum persists behind that of adults. As of 2022, only 63% of all children living with HIV knew their HIV status, 57% had started antiretroviral therapy (ART), and 46% had reached viral suppression.2 In addition, despite comprising only 4% of people living with HIV, children account for 13% of all AIDS-related deaths.
