Abstract
Respiratory illness is very common in both children and adults. It is important to be able to distinguish common mild illnesses from life-threatening acute and chronic diseases. This is achieved with a careful history, examination and investigation which is different for children and adults. Pleural, airway and interstitial lung diseases have distinct presentations, leading to specific diagnostic algorithms. Common risk factors for chronic respiratory disease include HIV infection, allergen or occupational exposure and tobacco or biomass smoke exposure.
