Abstract

Human brucellosis is still common in many parts of the world, but is rarely mentioned in pretravel counselling or in the related literature and websites. It is a zoonosis caused by infection with one of several species of bacteria of the genus Brucella. Each species has different animal hosts, ecology and geographical distributions. In primary host animals such as goats, sheep, cattle and camels the bacteria are usually transmitted sexually, resulting in abortions and chronic infections, the latter often without obvious symptoms.
