Abstract
An unusual case of flail chest is presented. A 55 year-old man with no history of trauma presented with back pain and breathlessness. He was found to have a mobile anterior chest wall, gross osteopaenia, a raised ESR and anaemia, but normal Bence-Jones protein. Bone marrow examination and serum electrophoresis confirmed a diagnosis of multiple myeloma. The flail chest was managed with analgesia and rest and the man was discharged home walking unassisted.
