Biography

After obtaining a BSc in Neuroscience from the University of Manchester Rohit Patel completed MRes and PhD degrees at the University of Nottingham specialising in neuropharmacology. He joined the Centre for Snakebite Research & Interventions at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in 2020 as a postdoctoral research associate and works under Prof Nicholas Casewell and Dr Cassandra Modahl.

Research interests

Rohit’s research involves investigating neurotoxic snake venom toxins from the ‘three-finger toxin’ family to find out what the most medically important toxins are and how they function. These toxins mainly target the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor at the neuromuscular junction to cause muscular paralysis. Inhibitors of these toxins are also assessed to determine their potential as treatments for neurotoxic snakebite. His interests also lie in investigating the mechanisms of action of toxins and other agents that cause neuronal damage.
