Louise Ford graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Applied Biology from the University of Leeds and a MS. in Applied Parasitology and Medical Entomology from the University of Liverpool. She began her career as a Research Assistant at the University of Durham before joining Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) to complete a PhD on the role of Wolbachia in the immune response to filariasis. Louise then moved to the New York Blood Center to work as a post-doctoral research fellow to identify potential filarial drug and vaccine candidates.
Since returning to LSTM in 2007 Louise has worked on projects including the Anti-Wolbachia (A·WOL) Drug Discovery & Development Programme, Visceral Leishmaniasis diagnostics in the Indian Sub-Continent, and most recently evaluating the efficacy of mosquito control products in the Liverpool Insect Testing Establishment / iiDiagnostics spinout.
Louise holds a Team Leader Apprenticeship Level 3 (Distinction) and has undertaken training in Leading in LSTM, LEAP, and Good Laboratory Practice with the Research Quality Association.
She is a member of the Research Quality Association, Secretary for the LSTM Disability and Carers Network and an i-act (Positive Mental Health and Wellbeing) accredited manager. Louise regularly volunteers for LSTM public engagement activities, such as Pint of Science and Africa Oye, and hosts students from In2Science placements.
Louise’s research interests are focused on mosquito control and neglected tropical diseases and include insecticide testing, drug discovery and development, and diagnostics. As a Study Director in Liverpool Insect Testing Environment, a client-based facility at LSTM which rears multiple strains of mosquitoes to evaluate the efficacy and durability of mosquito control products, she is interested in research and development of novel insecticide products. Liverpool Insect Testing Environment is a member of the UK Good Laboratory Practice compliance monitoring programme and Louise enjoys working in an environment designed to run studies to these standards. Louise is an author on 40 peer-reviewed publications, 2 book chapters, and 1 patent.
Louise has previously taught on BSc and MSc courses at LSTM, specially on filariasis and NTDs.
She has hosted A level student placements as part of the In2Science programme.
