Biography

Kirstie Lewis gained her BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology from the University of Manchester. Following this she completed an MRes in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Chester during which she carried out a research project investigating the mechanisms of cell death induced by hexabromocyclododecane.
Prior to starting at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine she worked as a Scientist at a Contract Research Organisation, where she investigated novel therapeutics in translation models of infection.
In addition to her current role as a Research Assistant she is also a part-time PhD student and a member of the Green Lab leads.

Research interests

Kirstie’s research focuses on intracellular models of infection, such as salmonella typhimurium, testing the intracellular activity of antimicrobials and novel therapeutics.
Her working PhD title is 'Optimising therapeutic strategies for treatment of acute and chronic invasive salmonellosis'. Due to their host-restrictive nature to humans, it is not possible to use animal models when studying salmonella typhi and paratyphi, so research has been limited. There is currently a need for the development of more advanced 3D models of infection, such as human derived organoids, to enhance understanding of these pathogens and drive forward drug development and novel therapeutic strategies.
