Personal profile
Biography
Jonathan Gonzalez-Sanchez is a Research Scientist working at the Liverpool Vaccine Group, where he contributes to various clinical trials using controlled human infection models. His work involves studying a range of pathogens, including streptococcus pneumoniae, Bacillus Calmette-Guérin, and salmonella paratyphi A.
He has been particularly involved in researching Bacillus Calmette-Guérin, serving as the Laboratory Study Coordinator for the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin Controlled Human Infection Model Phase A and B trials. In this role, Jonathan has developed and optimised novel laboratory techniques, developed standard operating procedures and risk assessments, and provided training for laboratory staff. He is also responsible for inoculum preparation, the maintenance of microbial cultures, and the storage of stocks, while conducting molecular analyses such as DNA extractions, qPCR, and data interpretation.
Jonanthan has contributed to major research projects using the experimental human pneumococcal challenge, ensuring that laboratory processes are in line with good clinical practice, good laboratory practice, and Human Tissue Authority regulations.
He has extensive experience in SARS-CoV-2 molecular diagnostics, next-generation sequencing, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, immune assays, optimising and validating immunity testing kits.
Jonathan holds a BSc in Biological Sciences, a MSc in Physiology and Neuroscience, and MSc in Secondary School, Vocational and Language teaching.
Research interests
Since completing his studies in biological sciences, Jonathan has had the opportunity to work in various research areas, including genetics and bioinformatics, human diseases, and currently, controlled human infection models.
His interest in human diseases, particularly rare diseases and neurological disorders, is deeply personal, stemming from a genetic mutation in NOTCH3 affecting his family, which impacts the small blood vessels in the brain. This experience has inspired Jonathan to pursue a career in research, driving his passion to better understand these conditions and work towards developing effective treatments.
Teaching
Jonathan has experience teaching high school students in Geology and Biology, focusing on making science interesting and understandable. His goal was to help students connect with the material by using hands-on activities and examples from the world around them.
