Biography

Jessica William’s graduated with a BSc in Animal Behaviour from John Moores University, and an MCs in Animal Reproduction from the University of Liverpool. She worked as an industry technician before starting a job as a research technician in Liverpool Insect Testing Establishment at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) in 2013. Whilst in this position she completed a PhD in Medical Entomology under the supervision of Hilary Ranson.
Jessica has been a Programme Officer (Study Director) in Liverpool Insect Testing Establishment since 2022 where she is responsible for contributing to the development of new insecticides and vector control products, supervising a technical team and ensuring compliance with good laboratory practice standards.
She has been an active member of the Athena Swan assessment team whilst at LSTM and participated in many public engagement activities across in the UK.

Research interests

Jessica has a keen interest in the testing of new insecticides and products designed to control mosquitoes. She is currently working towards the design and implementation of a bespoke tunnel test to evaluate the efficacy and durability of mosquito bed nets destined for public health control programs.
During her PhD, she specialised in the characterisation of insecticide resistant strains held in Liverpool Insect Testing Establishment, as well as researching insecticide resistance development in wild mosquito populations from West Africa. She has designed several qPCR assays used to detect novel mutations found in increasing frequency amongst insecticide resistant wild populations.
Jessica oversees the quality control of 12 mosquito strains maintained in Liverpool Insect Testing Establishment at LSTM through molecular qPCR genotyping protocols and routing bioassay testing.

Teaching

Jessica has been involved with annual In2Science student placements promoting social mobility and diversity in STEM and has carried out LSTM MSc student practical sessions over several years.
