Biography

Isabel Lucas has more than 30 years of professional experience in English and academic development, with the last 15 years being at executive level. She has a rich, global perspective on education stemming from having taught all ages from 4 to 84 and broad experience of designing and delivering curricula to schools, colleges, universities, charities, businesses and government in 28 different countries. She is a strong strategist and enjoys working with her global network to create effective opportunities for students and staff to thrive and to develop innovative solutions to develop education. Isabel is passionate about teaching and learning and sees education as a force for good. Her earlier work to support international students to access UK Higher Education led to a Times Higher Award for Outstanding Student Support and her sustained impact on Higher Education led to her appointment as Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine's first Professor of Education in 2023.
Isabel currently holds a number of positions in higher education: Chair of the national Heads of Educational Development Group, Co-ordinator of the AHE-UK Pro-Vice Chancellor Education group for Small, Specialist and College-based HE, Trustee at St Helen's College (Quality and Curriculum Committee), Expert Reader for the QAA Quality Code, Reviewer for the QAA TNE scheme.
In addition, Isabel is a Senior Fellow of Assessment in Higher Education and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. She holds three degrees and a teaching qualification.

Research interests

As a linguist and expert in English as a Foreign Language, Isabel has an ongoing research interest in modified discourse in educational setting but her recent scholarly activity focuses on academic development and includes the importance of those third-space professionals for the sustainability of UKhigher education. The impact of her practical work in this area has led to a number of keynote speaker invitations for the Access to Higher Education Diploma, Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, Times Higher Education, and other international universities.
