As Head of Faculty Operations for Clinical Sciences & International Public Health at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), Hazel Snell leads the operations of two academic departments (approximately 230 staff), supporting the Heads of Department to provide leadership and management within the faculty. She leads on the development, implementation and monitoring of departmental strategic plans, strategic appointments, career progression, partnership strategy and culture. Her role promotes collaborative leadership for the assurance of academic quality, efficiency and effectiveness in the operation of the academic department’s activities. She provides the strategic conduit for the academic departments to engage with professional services and faculty of education.
Hazel is also Non-Executive Director and Chairperson of Local Solutions, a large charity which delivers services to support individuals, families and communities with a primary focus on those experiencing disadvantage, exclusion and vulnerability in Liverpool City Region and North Wales. In 2023, she was made a Deputy Lieutenant for Merseyside, supporting the lieutenancy to promote King's Awards for Voluntary Service, Enterprise, personal honours and citizenship.
Hazel has a BSc (Hons) in European Regional Development and a MBA (Distinction and Student of the Year Award) from University of Liverpool, alongside a Certificate in Management (Institute of Management) and Executive Business Coach qualification (Institute of Leadership & Management).
In her previous positions in LSTM (Senior Programme Manager and Operations Manager), she was responsible for key aspects of business management, including recruitment and management of teams both in UK and overseas, financial management of large and complex funds, relationship management and collaboration with development agencies, Ministries of Health, academic institutions and professional bodies in the health sector, and the design and delivery of a communications strategy. Hazel has also coordinated the establishment of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and developed governance, financial and general management standard operating procedures for overseas programmes and offices.
