Biography
Gemma Harvey is a Research Technician at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM). She works in methods validation for vector control tools as a data analyst to support the development of statistical methods for the optimisation and validation of current and novel tools.
Gemma joined LSTM in 2022 as a MSc student reading Tropical Disease Biology following a BSc in Biomedical Science (with industrial placement) at the University of Warwick. She gained experience in diagnostic and research laboratories during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Since being at LSTM Gemma has gained substantial expertise conducting mosquito bioassays. Under Professor Hilary Ranson she completed a research project investigating the behaviour and sublethal effects of knockdown resistant mosquitoes. Gemma currently contributes to various projects in the Vector Biology department including the development of sample size calculators for mosquito bioassays.
Research interests
Gemma has a broad range of research interests. In her current role she is focused on vector control product evaluation, validation of bioassay methods of current and novel vector control tools, sample size analysis for bioassays, data visualisation and analysis.
Her additional research interests include studying communicable diseases and molecular diagnostics such as the optimisation and validation of molecular methods (PCR, sequencing techniques) for the purposes of diagnostic assays for pathogen detection.
