Biography

Emma Reid is a Research Technician in the Vector Department at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM). She has a background in Human Biology and Infectious Disease (BSc Hons) and Biomedical Science (MSc), both from the University of Salford. Prior to joining LSTM, Emma worked as an analyst at MicroSearch Laboratories Ltd, where she was responsible for calculating nutritional information and testing for allergens in food products.
Her research career began as part of a project team monitoring vector abundance, insecticide resistance, and parasite infection in Phlebotomus argentipes sand flies in India. She is currently working towards a PhD focused on the use of insecticide-treated nets in Africa. Emma’s research explores mosquito behaviour and insecticide bioavailability as part of a large-scale durability trial.
Beyond her research, she is an active member of the LSTM community. She serves as a lab representative on the Sustainability and Environment Committee and leads the Green Lab Leads team, working to implement sustainable practices across all of LSTM’s laboratories. Emma is also co-chair of the Technicians Committee and focused on advancing the Technician Commitment action plan.

Research interests

Emma's research focuses on vector control, insecticide resistance, insecticide treated bednets, mosquito behaviour, and bed net durability. 

Teaching

Emma sometimes assists with practical sessions for various taught modules, usually themed around mosquitoes, vector control or malaria diagnostics.
