Biography

Dr Dima El Safadi holds a PhD in Medical and Food Microbiology from the University of Lille 2 along with additional master’s degrees in Medical Microbiology and Applied Health Sciences from the Lebanese University. She was promoted to Professor in Microbiology at the Lebanese University in 2021 and became a UK Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK in 2023.
Since 2022, Dr El Safadi has served as Laboratory Program Manager and researcher at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM). In this role, she oversees laboratory operations for clinical trials focused on vaccine development and infectious diseases, contributing significantly to LSTM’s mission of advancing global health.

Research interests

Dr El Safadi's research focuses on the transmission, genetic diversity, and pathogenicity of infectious human and zoonotic diseases. She conducts her work within the One Health framework, which integrates the health of humans, animals, and the environment. Her research has provided critical insights into infectious disease transmission in Lebanon, and other European and African countries.
Currently, Dr El Safadi leads the microbiological aspects of challenge models, particularly those investigating respiratory and enteric pathogens, while continuing her studies on the epidemiology and transmission of infectious diseases in Lebanon. In addition, she has worked as a consultant on zoonotic disease transmission, diagnostics, and veterinary vaccine development for various institutions across the Middle East and North Africa region, complementing her research and supporting public health efforts.

Teaching

Dr El Safadi’s teaching focuses on medical microbiology, food borne diseases, parasitology, infectious disease epidemiological surveillance, and research methodology, with a strong emphasis on One Health and the integration of human, animal, and environmental health. She has mentored numerous master’s and PhD students, guiding them in the exploration of disease transmission, pathogenicity, and genetic diversity in infectious diseases, both within the Middle East and North Africa region and globally. Dr El Safadi is deeply committed to fostering the next generation of scientists and contributing to the academic and professional development of her students.
