Biography
Since September 2023, Christine Goffinet has been Chair in Virology in Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine’s (LSTM’s) Department of Tropical Disease Biology. Born in France, she relocated aged eleven to Hamburg, Germany, where she studied Biology at Hamburg University. Christine earned her doctorate from Heidelberg University in 2007, focusing on the characterisation of a small animal model for HIV infection. She established her research group at Ulm University, followed by a Junior Professorship at Hannover Medical School/TWINCORE. In 2019, she became Associate Professor for Virology at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
Christine’s antiviral immunity and viral evasion team research HIV-1, arthritogenic alphaviruses like chikungunya and Mayaro viruses, SARS-CoV-2, and MPXV. They investigate cellular cofactors and antiviral restriction factors, HIV-1 persistence, emerging virus replication, tropism and viral antagonism of innate defences. She secured funding from the Academy of Medical Sciences, EU, Medical Research Council, NHRR, The Pandemic Institute, and Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.
Christine serves as the Deputy Head of the Department of Tropical Biology and is a member of LSTM’s Biological Safety and Research Committees and ECR Review Panel. She is an ad hoc reviewer for Nature Microbiology, Nature Communications, Cell Reports, PLoS Pathogens, and Journal of Virology. She has received support from Deutsche Studienstiftung, German Research Foundation, Human Frontier Science Program, Wellcome Trust, Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, Medical Research Council, Swedish Research Council, High Council for Evaluation of Research and Higher Education, and other funding organisations, and is a member of the Scientific Committee of Basic Research on HIV/AIDS:virus-host (CSS11) of ANRS.
Christine is co-lead for Academic Career Development, Operational Management Team member of the National Institute for Health and Care Research Health Protection Research Units in Emerging and Zoonotic Infections, and member of TPI Internal Scientific Advisory Board.
