Professor Charles Anawo Ameh is a distinguished leader in global public health, specialising in maternal and newborn health. With over 20 years of experience as an educator, mentor, obstetrician, and gynaecologist, Professor Ameh has made significant contributions to improving health outcomes in low-income countries. He currently serves as the Head of the Department of International Public Health at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM).
Professor Ameh's academic journey includes a PhD in Maternal and Newborn Health from LSTM, a Master of Public Health from the University of Liverpool, a Postgraduate Fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from the West Africa College of Surgeons and Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. His research focuses on maternal and newborn health quality of care.
An active member of several professional bodies, Professor Ameh is a Fellow of the Society of Gynaecologists and obstetricians of Nigeria, Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the Royal Society of Public Health, and the Royal Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. He has authored over 75 peer-reviewed publications, 11 books/chapters, and numerous training manuals, and has successfully secured multiple research grants totalling millions of pounds.
Beyond his academic and research achievements, Professor Ameh is deeply committed to public and community engagement. He actively participates in Race Equity initiatives within LSTM and the Liverpool community and is on the LSTM Executive and Race Equity Action Group. He has served on various internal committees at LSTM, including the Learning and Teaching Committee, Quality Management Committee, Research Committee, Governance Oversight Committee and the Athena SWAN Self-Assessment Team. He mentors PhD and master's students, fostering the next generation of global health researchers.
Professor Ameh is a member of the Global Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response Technical Working Group, the World Health Organisations Technical Advisory Group on Maternal Mortality and Maternal Cause of Death Estimation, and a steering committee member of the Global Alliance for Improving Midwifery Education.
His main research interests are maternal and newborn health implementation science, quality of care, emergency obstetric care, health system strengthening, midwifery education, and maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response.
Professor Ameh supervises PhD students on a range of topics aligned to his research interests. Topics include midwifery education faculty development, maternal near miss, obstetric early warning systems, effective coverage of antenatal care, quality of prenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care, and maternal perinatal surveillance and response.
