Biography

Brent Thomas joined the Centre for Snakebite Research & Interventions at LSTM in 2019 as a programme manager and oversaw multiple programmes funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), the Medical Research Council (MRC), and Wellcome Trust. In 2023, Brent was appointed Senior Programme Manager to help guide the strategic direction of the centre while continuing to oversee a wide range of research programmes, including the African Snakebite Alliance, ANYSNAKE Clinical Trial programmes, and managing LSTM's Herpetarium.

Prior to this, he joined LSTM in 2010 as a consultant looking at Monitoring and Evaluation systems for the Centre for Neglected Tropical Diseases (CNTD), before moving to the Vector Group working on insecticide resistance mechanisms in Sudan. In 2011, he returned to CNTD and worked on implementation and monitoring and evaluation activities for the lymphatic filariasis elimination programmes to strengthen regional programmes and ‘shrink’ the lymphatic filariasis map. While at CNTD, he also worked on schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths in Zambia, Mozambique and Liberia.

As the programme progressed, he took on the role of programme manager for the Liberian and Ghanaian neglected tropical diseases programmes, as well as the laboratory support by CNTD. The management of the country programmes required the oversight of implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and morbidity activities, and he participated in key planning and document writing sessions with the WHO, Ministries of Health and other partners.

Research interests

Brent is passionate about improving the effectiveness and efficiency of neglected tropical diseases programmes through co-implementation and increased integration of programmes and activities. This includes both the traditionally preventive chemotherapy and case management of neglected tropical diseases, such as snakebite.

Teaching

Brent has contributed to parasitological and entomological practical demonstrations and examinations for the Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H) and MSc since 2011. He delivered teaching and evaluations for the (former) Biology and Control of Parasite and Disease Vectors MSc with a primary focus on the Parasite Epidemiology & Control module through demonstrations, lectures and marking. Additionally, he has taught on various other courses and modules offered by LSTM, including the Development of a Disease Control Programme.
