Biography

Bethany Batterley received her BSc (Hons) in Human Biology and Biochemistry from Keele University in 2021. During her time at Keel, she worked with Professor Helen Price for her third-year dissertation, analysing new compounds on a drug discovery project for leishmaniasis. She was also awarded the Campion prize of biology and Top Student award.
Following this, she completed an MSc in Tropical Disease Biology at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) in 2022. Bethany’s dissertation involved sampling various sites within the North-West of England to see whether any tick-borne diseases (such as Tick-borne encephalitis, anaplasmosis and Lyme disease) were prevalent.
As of October 2022, she began the Medical Research Council Doctoral training programme PhD at LSTM under the supervision of Professor Joseph Turner and Dr Shree Hedge. Bethany’s PhD project involves novel research, trying to identify new biomarkers of infection for the neglected tropical disease lymphatic lilariasis. Bethany also undertook a 3-month internship with the UK Health Security Agency working on projects relating to future pandemic preparedness.

Research interests

Bethany has a strong interest in neglected tropical disease research, with a focus on improving their diagnostics and surveillance. Her research focuses on lymphatic filariasis, a neglected tropical disease caused by filarial worms. Current diagnostics for this disease are lacking, which is hindering surveillance and future elimination. Bethany’s PhD aims to identify new biomarkers of infection to aid the production of new diagnostics, which can hopefully be developed to help progress current elimination goals set by the World Health Organisation.

Teaching

Bethany has contributed to teaching on various MSc modules at LSTM and obtainied her Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy qualification.
