Biography
Amanda McCoy is an experienced health economist with over fifteen years’ experience working in international health planning, budgeting and costing, as well as donor coordination. Born to a British father and Brazilian mother, having grown up in Switzerland, she is a French, Portuguese and English native speaker. She has worked directly for the Ministry of Health in Mozambique, first as technical assistance to the planning and cooperation department, and subsequently as a consultant. She has supported the development of the cost component for several strategic and operational health sector plans, working in close coordination with Ministry of Health colleagues, including from disease programmes such as HIV, TB and malaria. She has previously held a post in the World Health Organisation office in Hanoi as the Officer for Health Planning and Donor coordination. Since returning to the UK and prior to joining Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), her roles included working in Strathclyde University’s Management Sciences Department as a member of the Center for Health Policy and as a consultant on the economic evaluation of malaria control interventions and market analysis of the impregnated treated nets market.
Research interests
Amanda is co-investigator on a project looking at post-discharge malaria chemoprevention in children with severe anaemia in Benin, Kenya, Malawi and Uganda. She is also co-investigator for the Start 4 All consortium examining novel TB diagnostics and diagnostic combinations and pathways to find the missed millions.
Teaching
Amanda teaches on health economics and financing on the Master of Public Health programme.
