Organisation profile

The Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Programme (MLW) is an internationally renowned health research institution based in Blantyre, Malawi. Led by both Malawian and international scientists, MLW is dedicated to scientific excellence and to improving health outcomes across sub-Saharan Africa.

Affiliated with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, MLW operates from its headquarters in Blantyre and across field sites in urban Blantyre, Thyolo, and Chikhwawa. Its mission is to conduct high-quality, locally relevant research and to train the next generation of researchers and clinicians.

As part of its strategic growth, MLW has launched the Clinical Research Excellence and Training Open Resource (CREATOR) facility at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital. This state-of-the-art, five-storey, 3,350-square-meter building nearly doubles MLW’s research and training space. The CREATOR facility will play a pivotal role in expanding regional clinical expertise and scaling up postgraduate specialist training in the clinical sciences.

MLW’s success is built on a foundation of equitable international partnerships and strong collaboration with the Malawian government. Its approach emphasizes, transparency and equitable involvement in research design, shared leadership structures across institutions and strategic promotion of Low- and Middle-Income Country (LMIC) partners within collaborations.

MLW is embedding these principles into global health research, ensuring that mutually supportive, two-way partnerships drive progress. By fostering such inclusive models, MLW continues to address major health priorities both regionally and globally positioning itself as a world-leading research institute in a low-income country.

Through the LSTM Research Portal, you can explore the work of researchers holding joint positions at LSTM and MLW, as well as LSTM researchers collaborating with MLW.
