Organisation profile

Organisation profile

Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine's (LSTM) mission is to improve health outcomes in disadvantaged populations globally through partnership in research and education. We excel in translating leading academic research outputs into measurable benefits to health, and were ranked 2nd for research impact in the REF2021 exercise.  We recognise that how we do research is as important as the outputs of the research itself and our values illustrate our commitment to equitable partnerships, integrity and inclusivity in all we do.

Our Strategy is built around four core themes;

  • Research - We will focus on enhancing our knowledge and understanding of cross-cutting global issues that pose a threat to human health and development, and on responding to the existing and emerging global health challenges faced by disadvantaged people in society.
  • Education - We will develop and nurture the global health leaders of the future; graduates who understand the sensitivities of working and undertaking research in resource-constrained environments. LSTM graduates will be known as innovators; curious and outstanding professionals, highly sought after for their impact in health and health-related sectors.
  • Partnerships - We will nurture, develop and expand our equitable partnerships, working with those who share our vision for sustainable development and health equity. We will actively seek out equity within our partnerships, collaborating with those who can help realise our ambitions and amplify the potential of our research for the communities who most need it.
  • Investing in our future - We will create an environment and culture in which all LSTM staff feel valued and their achievements are recognised. We will continue to evolve and develop our organisational resources and capabilities and focus our strategic investment to achieve our mission and guarantee the future sustainability of LSTM.

At LSTM, research takes place across and between Faculties, Departments, and Research Centres, allowing for a blend of specialised approaches and interdisciplinary innovation.
